Charlotte, Jane And Kristin

Charlotte Rampling, Jane Birkin and Kristin Scott Thomas all have a few things in common, they are all great actresses, possess beauty, style and elegance, they are all English women who married Frenchmen and they are all bilingual.  The French have taken these three women into their hearts, you cannot open a magazine without seeing images of their faces or editorials about their style.

I admire all of these women, not only for their individuality and style but also for their great acting ability and for the choices they have made in film roles, Hollywood has not seduced these women, they all play rolls that challenge them, as they are bilingual they can flit between playing in French film or English language films, the films they appear in have often been avant garde and edgy.  I would love to see a sumptuous Vanity Fair/Vogue style photo of the three of them together so Annie or Mario if your reading...

  2. Kristen actually looks French. She doesn't have much of the Brit about her at all, does she?

  4. OK, I beg to differ. Jane Birkin was never a great actress. But she was a beauty.

  5. I think it's a tribute to French men that they can get such beautiful and talented women from England--a country with which France has had centuries of rivalry--to marry them. So are Frenchmen more exciting than Englishmen? I would guess so!

On the other hand, I note that none of these women are still married! So I guess it's also a tribute to French taste in women that the French public doesn't care, having long ago adopted these three women as their own. (The women have also adopted each other, btw--are very close friends.)

Who said that France was a closed culture? Maybe they are just have a high bar for the sort of person they think is worth opening up to?

And will Carla Bruni-Sarkozy get this treatment if her marriage fails? That is the question...

  8. Three favourites of mine as well, and all so lovely. Jane Birkin has a wonderful activist spirit and a web site devoted to same.

  10. Kristin's always been one of my favourites - I love beauty that's unusual and doesn't conform to accepted norms. Great post.

  12. I think you can only get away lying on the top of a car and looking fabulous only if you are Charlotte Rampling.
