I was deeply saddened at the news of the death of Amy Winehouse last weekend. I followed her career right from the beginning and remember a beautiful, curvaceous, young girl with a wit and intelligence way beyond her years. I simply adore the two albums she produced, full of raw emotion, pathos, great lyrics and that distinctive, wonderful voice. She kick started a flagging, British music scene, paving the way for a new breed of talented, young songstresses who can sing and write wonderful lyrics; Adele, Duffy, Lily, Paloma and Joss, spring to mind. Her troubles with drugs, drink and destructive relationships have been well documented, I hoped she could kick the cycle of addiction but it was not to be. Her legacy will be her music and the two fabulous albums she produced which in my opinion are masterpieces. I prefer to remember Amy as she was before the harrowing images of an addicted and distressed young woman started to appear in the tabloid press. Goodbye Amy, rest in peace.
