Up To My Neck

Costumes by Vivienne Westwood, hats by Stephen Jones, photography by Simon Proctor, celebrating 300 years of Royal Ascot

I would love to be wearing a fabulous outfit, topped off by a wondrous hat, floating round the Royal Enclosure, studying the form, with a glass of bubbly in hand...

But no, I am getting the house ready for our own Summer Season and I am up to my neck in cleaning, the nearest I am to a thoroughbred racehorse right now is cursing the local horses, cows and sheep who are currently grazing in the adjacent fields and sending loads of fly's my way, I have just cleaned all the windows and although there is no grime or pollution to worry about, idyllic country living does bring it's own problems I can't tell you how hard it is to clean all the fly dirt off the windows inside and out.  Its hot here at the moment so the windows are open in the early morning and the little buggers are pouring in, they don't seem to sell fly screens here, all there is is spray, which makes me sneeze, those revolting sticky things you hang from the ceiling and ghastly stickers for the windows (which don't work).  Oh well at least the windows are clean for now.

Our first influx of seasonal guests arrive on Saturday, hence the mass cleaning frenzy and Belle Mere arrives on Sunday (she likes to see a clean, tidy and well ordered home) so the place has got to be pristine.  No stone is being left unturned, I have even run all the CLEAN glasses, that were languishing in a cupboard in the guest house, through the dishwasher as they have been unused since last season and have gone a bit foisty, nothing worse than a foisty wine glass!

Blog posts and commenting will probably be very thin on the ground for the next few days.  Next week I intend to reward myself by going to the local salon to treat myself to a leg and bikini wax, pedicure and manicure, and then I want to do something utterly glamorous, will see you then!

Fresh non foisty glasses!

A Quick Hello

A very short post today, I have loads to do, we have decided to have a party at the end of January and the house and garden desperately need some attention, I am going to have to fight the urge to sit at the computer and blog.
Wishing you all a wonderful weekend.

A Bit Random

God it's been hot, I know from many other bloggers  from New York to London and here in France, the Western Hemisphere is positively sizzling!

Once again I have been neglecting my blog, frankly I have had loads to do, not helped by the lethargy making heat and the fact that my computer is located in the hottest part of the house I cannot post when my brain is overheating.

MG went off to the 'Le Mans Classic' on Thursday with the boys! Reports via the girlfriends and wives network have filtered through of some very laddish behaviour involving drunkenness, (hardly surprising if the vast amount of whisky consumption rumours are true) irresponsibility and nudity!  Boys will be boys!

One of the boys went by bike, Crusoe decided to try it out for size

"Ooh I can smell chorizo, it appears to be coming from this chrome box"!

Meanwhile I have been left to do all the work another lot of guests arrived on Saturday, so guess what, I have been mowing, gardening, cleaning, ironing and making up beds severely hampered by the extreme humid heat.  When I haven't been doing that I have been taking cold showers and been prostrate on the sofa with a large fan directed at my glowing body! (horses sweat, men perspire and ladies glow).

These are some of the tools of my trade, located just outside our potting shed

The pay off, Campsis providing much needed shade over the Gazebo

I have decided I need a Femme de Menage (housekeeper) to help me, preferably a nice cheery lady from the village, I am not very good at delegating as I am a bit of a perfectionist but boy I could use some help, sometimes running a large five bedroomed property, with a big garden overwhelms me, the work is never finished it just goes on and on.

This is not me, it is my ideal Femme de Menage!

I have been dreaming of holidays, I spend so much time ensuring everything is perfect for our guests that I don't switch off, one of the joys of holidays is you don't have to worry about 'sorting that cupboard out' or organising an impromptu dinner party for eight.

MG recently muted Corsica as a possible destination, sometime later in the Summer, I was delighted, we went there about nine years ago....

 Calanche de Piana Corsica

When we were living in Paris we took a month out to do a big road trip round France, mainly this was a much needed break for MG who had been working solidly for four years in Paris and needed a break also it was an excuse for him to test his new sports car.

'The Moors Head' Corsican National Emblem
'The Corsicans want to see well, liberty shall follow the torch of philosophy and we shall not be scared by the light'

MG had said he always wanted to go to Corsica as he had heard it was beautiful, we were visiting Belle Mere who lives in Provence, we decided to go to Corsica for a couple of days, we could get the overnight ferry from Toulon To Bastia, Belle Mere was very dubious, she does not really like the Corsican's, they have quite a reputation, bandits, bombs etc. They are fiercely independent islanders trying to hold on to their culture, they are now governed by France, in order to pacify them, the French government give them tax concessions (I think this is why they have a bad reputation with French mainlanders).

Calanche de Piana Corsica

Well wow, I am quite well travelled, without doubt this is the most beautiful place I have ever visited, a couple of days turned into ten, we drove round the entire island the scenery changes every twenty miles or so, some parts are purely Mediterranean, other parts reminded me of Scotland, Cornwall, The Alps, God if I was a location manager in the film industry, I would just shoot in Corsica, it has everything.

These three images are all of Bonifacio, situated on Corsica's southern tip, on a clear day you can see the Northern coastline of Sardinia, Corsica's neighbouring Italian governed rival.

The road trip we took round Corsica was amazing, we went in June we had not pre booked anywhere, so we were relying on our 'Chambre d'hotes Corsica guide' just tipping up somewhere, they always had a room to spare, on one occasion MG left me in the car whilst he went into a small hotel, after half an hour of waiting I went in to see what had happened to him, the owner was plying him with his home made wine, they were a Corsican couple, warm and lovely, of course they had a room! after an evening of heavy drinking and a lot of singing, (Corsican's like singing!) we were directed to a very cosy, rustic room, we had one hell of hangover the next day, but it is an experience I will never forget and totally dispels the myth that Corsican's are hostile and unfriendly, I think at this point I might add that Napoleon was Corsican and that Corsicans experience great longevity they put this down to lot's of drinking, good women, good men, good food and smoking, most Corsicans and Sardinians live well into their hundreds.

Next three pictures show three of the hundreds of beaches, in Corsica, some hidden gems, coves with nobody on them just waiting for you and that necessary dip in the cooling sea

And others, like this beach in Calvi, still wonderful, not overrun but offering sun loungers, parasols and waiter service,

One of my favourite places in Corsica was Calvi, situated on the North West of the Island, I remember watching these amazing super yachts coming in, they were too big to get into the port, we were watching this whilst having dinner at one of the many alfresco restaurants in Calvi, we asked the waiter about these yachts, he told us "Oh that is Valentino and his friends, many fashion designers come every year, they prefer it here to St Tropez or Monaco, they have privacy here and take inspiration from the beauty of the island".

Valentinos Yatch, TM, 'The Blue One', not sure where this photo is shot, but it's not Corsica

Of course the next day MG hired a jet ski we explored the beautiful coastline, and took a dip in the azure sea, but we could not resist getting up close and personal to Valentino's yatch, we did not see him but we did see his crew and his pugs, we waved his crew waved back and that was it, sadly no invitation for early evening cocktails!

We also explored the Fango valley, just south of Calvi we discovered an old derelict olive farm, with great potential, we were planning what we could with it if we could purchase it, just one of those holiday dreams!

Fango Valley, Corsica

Other highlights of the holiday was MG's racing driver abilities, some of the roads in central Corsica are very treacherous on one occasion we were negotiating a narrow mountain pass when a coach appeared, the coach was not budging so MG had to reverse, I closed my eye's tight, if I had have opened them, all I would have seen was a sheer, rocky drop into the Mediterranean, phew we made it, another reason why MG loves Corsica so much is the fact they have a major rally circuit, on another occasion he was challenged to an impromptu rally drive through a forest, yes with me as passenger, clinging on for dear life, the other driver had the advantage of knowing the terrain, even though I was petrified MG did a Stirling job, thank God he is an excellent driver with great reflexes.

Early evening in Calvi

Infinity pool somewhere in Corsica, that will do nicely

Oh I hope we go back, as you can see from my enthusiasm I love it, MG wants to do car things, but he could just drop me off at a beach or in Calvi and we could meet up later for cocktails.

I also have to add that McDonald's is banned in Corsica and buildings cannot exceed four stories, now that has to be a good thing...

Busy, Busy, Busy

I am still here, I have had an enforced blogging break due to household duties, another lot of Summer guests arrived yesterday and all week I have been frantically cleaning, ironing, gardening etc.. MG decided to replace the skirting boards in the guest kitchen, so he was trying to do that whilst running his business.  Yesterday was swelteringly hot MG strimmed and I mowed the lawn which was hard work in the heat we both had to take lot's of breaks for iced tea, then a general garden clean up before the guests arrived, job done... we were both exhausted.

MG went off to Belle Meres in Provence this morning as tomorrow she is moving into her new abode so he has gone armed with his tool box, ready to hang pictures, move furniture, lift heavy objects and do anything else you can think of to assist the moving in process. Crusoe and I are home alone and the weather has turned thundery; grey skies and constant drizzle, we are both feeling a bit flat.

I think I am going to cheer myself up by assuming the recovery position on the sofa to watch something feelgood, I will give Crusoe a pigs ear to nibble on, so that should sort him out.

Tomorrow, I am going to be busy again, I am off to the UK on Wednesday for a week, so I will have to start preparing, I am really looking forward to it, a few days in Yorkshire to visit friends and family, then I am taking my Mother off to London for two day's for a much needed city hit, The Grace Kelly exhibition at the V&A, A visit to Leighton House Museum, Afternoon tea at The Wolsely and a trip to Liberty's are all on the agenda.

Crusoe is also going on a short break.  MG does not return until Friday, so he is going to stay with Mattie and Douglas his bosom border Collie buddies, their owners, close friends of ours, are into very long walks, so he will have lot's of fun.

I leave you with the spoils of all our hard work in the garden.

Spring Cleaning And Palazzo Pants

I am now in the throws of spring cleaning and frantic gardening, which is no mean feet with a large five bedroomed, 140 year old farmhouse that creates dust, the likes of which I have never witnessed before.

The cavalry is arriving tomorrow in the shape of Belle Mère I know she is armed with a steam cleaner to help aid the cleaning process and probably a very well packed car full of all manner of cleaning aids and handy household things, she is an angel and manages to get a shine on the parquet that I could never achieve.  When it is all done, I may even be able to do a chic interior post, welcoming you to my world, I will keep you posted.

In the meantime, something frivolous, Summer is nearly upon us, the weather here at present is very warm and the nights are drawing out, I am on the hunt for a new pair of palazzo pants, they could also be called wide legged trousers, beach pyjamas or lounge pants. I prefer palazzo pants as it sounds so lovely, regal and languid.

I have a fabulous pair of linen, chocolate brown Sarah Pacini palazzo pants, but they are so old I don't know if they have another season in them.

The shops and websites all seem to be full of harem pants, something I left behind long ago in the eighties. I don't know if I will be able to find a pair of my beloved palazzo pants, but I will do my best. For the moment, I leave you with some vintage palazzo pant images.

Just me and the dog!

It's just me and Crusoe for four days, MG has gone off to Belle Mères, in Provence, to help her negotiate her house sale. I dropped him off yesterday at Toulouse train station, Crusoe was in the back and as we drove away he looked forlornly out of the window, thank God for the Tom Tom, without it, I would have never found my way out of Toulouse city centre, I even managed to go wrong twice with the aid of the Tom Tom, it's crazy the Tom Tom says turn left, I think, that's not right, so I ignore it, only to get lost, fortunately the Tom Tom re-routes me, I must learn to trust it.

After negotiating my way out of the centre, I decided to stop off at Ikea, to buy some fairy lights for the Christmas tree, as is the way of Ikea I didn't buy the fairy lights and instead bought a new rug/throw for Crusoe, as his sheepskin rug, (see picture) is now totally disgusting and being sheepskin is unwashable, the rug/throw is so nice I have decided to keep it for ourselves, Crusoe is not happy about this, as I have already shown it to him, in a it's yours kind of a way. I also bought a light thingy, official Ikea name, Stranne, I have friends who already own this and have coveted it for a long time and now I own one, it's totally useless, but looks pretty and I can hang baubles off it for that Christmas look.

I have four days on my own, and I am supposed to be cleaning and tidying the house ready for
the Christmas onslaught. I have Belle Mère, Belle soeur and Beau frère staying chez nous for the festive season and friends joining us for Christmas day lunch, I thought I was super organised as I have bought all the presents and have also got some boxes of cards delivered from M & S waiting to be written and sent, now I need to sort the house out, not just normal cleaning but the polishing floors and cleaning windows type of cleaning, eek.

I started off well, when I got back yesterday I took all the rubbish and bottles to the recycling bins at the bottom of the road, emptied the hoover and cleaned it's filter, which is a mean feet for me as I am as allergic to dust as it is possible to be, (does that make sense?).

This morning I woke up with good intentions, to start on the serious stuff, but after jumping out of bed and having about three or four leisurely cups of tea in front of the computer, nothing has been achieved, except ordering a huge amount of books from Amazon. I blame India Knight, as I read her Christmas book guide and now have ordered practically all of her recommendations. Belle Mere and Belle Sœur are big readers, so I had the idea of putting lovely stacks of new books on their bedside tables to go with the flowers, but I think I will end up keeping them all myself!

I cannot maintain housework avoidance for much longer, MG will go mad if nothing has been achieved by Monday night, so I will now have to galvanise myself, or I could just make another cuppa.
