Almost Advent

How did it get to be the last day in November?  Advent starts tomorrow and I am starting to panic.  Cyber Monday came and went, I have a feeling this weekend will be my cyber moment, I really need to get cracking to ensure delivery.  We are away for Christmas and the New Year so no tree but I will be putting festive touches around the house.

There has been much discussion on blogs regarding high street shopping versus on-line shopping, for me it's a no brainer, on my laptop, warm and cosy, dog at my feet, glass of wine by my side.  Modern shopping centres or malls filled with all the usual suspects are my biggest nightmare although I will make an exception for this beautifully restored Victorian shopping arcade which is crammed full of wondrous, interesting and mainly independent boutiques. I will be visiting it shortly before Christmas, I will not be able to resist a few extra stocking fillers, there is  no doubt they will be wrapped on Christmas Eve.

MG has asked me what I would like for Christmas I have requested a wide angle lens for my camera... but then I saw some exquisite evening bags...

How are your plans going? Is all your Christmas shopping done?

Wishing you all a Wonderful Weekend.

Back to Black

If I could dress up like this every day, I would!

In winter black is always the new black for me! I am also partial to rich chocolate brown, deep reds or bright colours, cream or beige tones just wash me out so if I see something I like in a choice of colours black usually wins the day.  Here are a few things that have caught my eye on my internet wanderings, I always opt for good quality classics that will look good and last for years, all the following items are makes that I have tried and tested...

Boots from Ecco

I love to wear a boot with a high heel, I am of average height 5 '6 but I find my deportment instantly improves with a heel, which makes me feel more elegant not to mention the leg lengthening qualities. I also like to walk for miles so I need to marry comfort, height and style, sometimes this is not easy to achieve but a few years ago whilst walking past the shop Ecco during a visit to my home town, a store I had previously overlooked as most of  the shoes and boots looked very sensible and I avoid sensible shoes like the plague.  I purchased a lovely pair of black, plain, high heeled ankle boots, which had caught my eye in the window. They are without a doubt the most comfortable boots I have ever worn and I have walked for miles in them, three years later although they have been re heeled and soled they are as good as new.  This season these Victorian style ankle boots are tinkling my bell.

Tory Burch

I love Tory Burch Tunics in the summer so I am lusting after this cashmere twist for winter which you can dress up or down, this neckline is so flattering.

Of course with an all black outfit you need some colour to break it up, coloured silk, patterned or cashmere scarves usually work for me.  Jewellery wise I favour bold, statement pieces and I love vintage. I am loving Michal Golan Jewellery.  I bought a piece a couple of months back, they did not have the piece in stock so they made it up for me, their service was excellent and when the piece arrived (swiftly) the quality was superb and the price extremely reasonable...I will be purchasing some more for myself and for Christmas gifts.

"A lady always wears gloves" so my Mother tells me, she even wears them in the summer for driving.  Not only do they keep your hands warm but they can also help protect you from nasty winter viruses. I think smart leather one's round off a winter outfit beautifully, especially the longer one's which look fabulous with a swing coat or three quarter length sleeves.

Dents have even brought out a touch technology version, so you don't even have to take them off whilst using a phone or tablet. Available here.

A Few Days in Town

The view from the hotel bedroom window, the rooftops, zinc guttering and cooing pigeons reminded me of my time living in Paris.

We have been away for a few days, staying in the beautiful south western town of Pau.  It's only an hour from us but the reason we went was so that the menfolk could enjoy the Grand Prix de Pau Historique.  Pau and Monaco are the only street racing circuits still in existence in France.

A change is as good as a rest and it was lovely to wake up in the centre of a town, walk down the road and enjoy coffee and croissants at a pavement café however the weather was extremely fickle, I think we experienced everything bar snow! I forwent the races and concentrated on the shops and Pau has beautiful shops!  I tend to buy most things on-line these days but nothing beats browsing round a beautiful town, I walked round clad in high heeled ankle boots, that somehow feel wrong in May but ... with the weather. My feet were almost dropping off by the time I had finished.

My purchases included a new tote bag and these plimsolls, every Summer I invest in a pair, normally classic navy blue, this year I was thinking about Converse, all the well heeled ladies in Pau seemed to be wearing them, but I wore Converse when I was a teenager with drainpipe jeans and mohair jumpers, as soon as I clapped my eyes on these lavender Pataugas, I was sold, with a Summer holiday in Provence and Corsica looming, I just know they will get a lot of wear!

My new plimsolls

We are back home again now and typically the weather is beautiful, whilst we have been away things have been stirring in the garden.

Crusoe happy to be back home in his garden, taking a break before the next round of ball chasing and tackling anybody willing enough to run with his ball...Johnny Wilkinson, you have serious competition, Crusoe is available on most days to assist Rugby training, you kick he will bring the ball back every time...he is happy to do this for hours!

A quick stretch before the off!

The haze of White Wisteria on our balcony is coming into bloom

This creature is a Carpenter Bee, they are huge but harmless, you can't see here but their wings are iridescent and they are really rather beautiful, a friend of ours nicknamed it 'The Prada Bee'

Been Shopping

Via The Sartorialist

I don't normally follow trends or fashion but after seeing these images, I have been lusting after a pair of leopard print shoes for quite a while.  I don't own anything leopard print so I felt the need to fill the gap in my wardrobe.

Via The Sartorialist

I have been scouring the internet for a good quality, reasonably priced pair, out of all the one's I looked at I decided that these two from Dune were my favourites.

After hitting the red wine a week last Sunday, I went onto the John Lewis website, they were having one of those sale day's where everything is reduced, the first pair were reduced from £80.00 to £65.00, that decided it, after a few clicks, they were mine.

They arrived yesterday and I love them, it's ages since I bought new shoes, they are slightly too big as they don't come in half sizes and I am a five and a half so I bought them in a six, nothing that an insole won't sort out.  MG loves them too, which is a relief as I told him he had purchased some shoes for me as an early Birthday present!

This is how they look on, although this is a rotten photograph, it's very dull here today and hardly any light, my legs look ghostly pale, almost grey, poor things they have not seen the light of day since last September. Please excuse the cracked mirror, caused New Years Eve two years ago, I was trying to get my shoes off, whilst in a drunken stupor and held onto the mirror for support!   I still have not got round to replacing it, oh and that white thing is Crusoe's hind leg, he was asking for a walk...not in these shoes.

I also went for a girly day out in Pau last week with my friend M, we did a long lazy lunch then hit the shops.  We were not looking for anything in particular, just browsing, but when I spotted these earrings, I had to have them.

Don't be fooled by the box, I put them in there so I could photograph them, they are not antique, just antique style in faux rose quartz, from Agatha, they are lovely, they look opaque but when the light hits them they are really sparkly.

I also bought some frippery from Galeries Lafayette, with Summer in mind I bought this turquoise necklace and these bright coral and pink nail polishes from Rouge Basier.

Finally we made an amazing discovery, whilst we were looking for something else we discovered this new shop, at first we thought it was an art gallery but no it's a soap shop called Mylo this is a soap shop with a difference, the soaps look like works of art but they will cut them down and they are sold by weight.  All the soaps are made with natural plant extracts and shea butter (no palm oil).   The soaps smell divine and are all designed to help alleviate minor skin problems, they have soaps for all types of skin including soaps for exfoliation, anti cellulite, sebum regulation, elasticity, sun exposure, tired skin etc.  M said "she never thought she would get this excited over soap"  I have not been this excited over fragranced products since I discovered the Dyptique shop in Paris years ago.  M, who has a thing about great fragrances bought a coffret of different soaps including patchoulie and vetiver, they also had blackberry and chocolate, tomato and basil, sesame and saffron, some of them sound like weird concoctions but I assure you they smelt divine and the designs of the soaps are beautiful without being novelties.  Unfortunately their website is not up and running properly yet but to find out more go here.

I would like to wish all of you who are celebrating, a very merry St Patrick's Day.

Shopping And Bits & Bobs

Well, I promised I would do a shopping post, continuing on from the Harrogate trip post, so here it is, I know it's not earth shatteringly exciting, as you can probably see. I mainly concentrated on stuff that is not available in France, so this meant a trip to Marks and Spencers, for V neck sweaters and lingerie, I love their Autograph range, the quality is excellent and the prices for lingerie are much lower than French lingerie, which is beautiful, but for every day wear is a trifle extravagant, even for me! I know that you can buy cheaper lingerie in France at the likes of Monoprix and other places, but the quality is not great and they don' t seem to fit me properly.

I also hit Harrrogate's premier department store, for hosiery, I am a big fan of Wolford's velvet deluxe tights, they are not cheap at eighteen pounds a shot, but they are worth it, they are wonderful, no snags or ladders and can last for a couple of years, I can't find them in France, except in the Wolford shops but there are none of those round here and the likes of Galeries Lafayette, in true French protectionist style, only sell French makes, I also bought a couple of pairs of Pretty Polly nylons, for good measure, which are not available in France.

Then I hit Boots the Chemist, for, amongst other things, the No 7, protect and perfect range, which is excellent, I introduced this range to Belle Mère, who, thinks they are marvelous, and she is a lady that knows her creams, my Mother was so impressed by the products, she switched to No 7 from Guerlaine (the Rolls Royce of hydration), so It's not all hype, I have had loads of compliments on my complexion since I started using their products.

I am also a big fan of Olay's complete care everyday sunshine moisturiser, which is easily absorbed, gives you a light sun kissed glow, without making you orange, contains vitamin E and has an SPF of 15, Olay products are not available in France.

I also bought some pretty jewellery which was less than half price, from East. And two pairs of great fitting jeans, from George1V and Oasis, UK size 10, yippee.

I know, I took pictures of some of the fabulous interior design shops in Harrogate, but I did not dare go into them for fear of seeing something I could not possibly live without, and then suffering shopping guilt, let alone bringing too much back on a strict weight allowance.

My favourite thing, which I have not published as the photo's do not do it justice, is a beautiful Jackie O style, Escada shift dress and matching jacket in a stunning shade of purple, kindly given to me by my Mother. I tried it on, whilst I was helping my Mother sort her spare room out, and it fitted perfectly and I have to say, it looks really super on, although I don't know where I can wear it, no wedding's and no trips to the races are on the horizon.

Over the last couple of years my petite, five foot Mother has gone from a UK size 12 to a UK size 8, she is incredibly elegant and stylish and always wears gloves when she goes out, even in the summer for driving.  With her weight loss, she now has a spare room full of classically beautiful designer clothes, which now drown her, I am going back later in the year to photograph them and sell them on E Bay for her.

The other important purchase is a Liz Caiborne, medium sized, wheely suitcase, purchased from TK Max for fifty pounds.  Now this was an attempt to beat Ryan Air at it's own game.

On the return to Blighty post, there were a lot of unfavourable comments about Ryan air.  I was in a really bad mood, the morning we set off for the airport, just thinking about flying Ryan Air.  The baggage weight allowance is 10KG for hand luggage, one piece only, and 15KG for checked luggage, not a huge amount if you want to hit the shops.

On Ryan Air a ladies handbag now qualifies as one piece of hand luggage, as does any magazine, newspaper or other purchases bought whilst in the departure lounge.  When we booked the flight I put down one piece of luggage to be checked both ways (£30.00)  I am not the sort of person to start measuring creams and lotions into 100ML bottles, I  just chuck them in my vanity bag, so my luggage had to be checked in, on the outward flight I went through with just my handbag as hand luggage.

We needed a new medium size suitcase, and MG also shopped, he bought a new laptop, amongst other things, on the outward flight I checked in the new suitcase full of goodies and went through with my small weekend case as hand luggage, with MG's laptop, and my handbag squashed in, even the large amount of English glossies I bought in the departure lounge fitted in!

When we got to the the departure gate, there were several ladies, scrabbling about on the floor trying to fit everything in to one bag, there was one lady, a seasoned Ryan Air pro, trying to get a laptop, handbag, four packets of Richmond Pork sausages, five packets of Digestives, packets of Lemsip (sound familiar) and other assorted items into one cloth bag, I did not think she would do it, but she did. I was most impressed, she turned packing a small cloth bag into an artform, and I told her so, we had a bit of a grumble and a giggle about Ryan Air and handbags.

At Stansted Airport departure lounge, just before you head off to the gates there is a Pret A Manger, MG and I bought sandwiches and drinks to take on the plane, I had the sandwich in my hand as I went through the boarding gate, I was half expecting the rather officious Ryan air lady to confiscate it, she didn't, I was certainly not going to pay the over inflated prices for the rubbish, they call food, on board a Ryan Air Flight.

I settled in to read the tacky in flight magazine, which informed me that Ryan Air want to change the habits of air passengers by charging to use the loo, that way, they can maximise space and flight costs will be even lower, Oh where will it end, The Ryan Air staff, try to sell you as much as possible, whilst the captive audience is imprisoned, with no leg room or elbow room. The flight both ways was on time though, which they inform you by a fanfare over the tannoy on arrival and proudly announce they are the most prompt airline in the world, well that's something then.

A Fleeting Return To Dear Blighty

We are going to England tomorrow for a fleeting visit, MG has business to attend to and I am going along for the ride, to spend some much needed time with family and close friends.

Sadly, it will be very fleeting, flying Tuesday to Stansted, hiring a car and driving up to Yorkshire to stay at my Mothers, only to drive back to Stansted on Friday night for an early Saturday morning flight,  I thought it would be for a whole week, or maybe even two weeks, I am longing to visit some much neglected friends in London.  But MG booked it, and, Hmm, Ryan Air (loathe Ryan Air) did not have the availability for a longer visit.

We will be staying in my home town, Harrogate, in North Yorkshire and whilst MG will be attending to business bit's and bobs, I am looking forward to having a girly time with my mother and sister, spending time with my father and hopefully catching up with my very busy brother. I am also hoping to fit in some close friends, but with only three whole days, to spare I don't know how I am going to fit it all in.

Here are some of the thing's I am looking forward to doing, with family and friends:

Err, Harrogate is famous for it's beautiful shop's, so shopping is high on my agenda.
Being a lady that lunches

Walking through the town, and taking lot's of photo's

Hope I can fit in a long walk in the Yorkshire Dale's, sadly Crusoe won't be with me. (He is going for his own adventure, staying with friends, who have two sheepdogs).
Shopping
Cream tea at Betty's
Shopping
A visit to the garden centre
Shopping
I won't have the time but if I did I would:

Go to Leeds, to visit the beautiful Victoria Quarter to do more shopping, Oh, I have to show you a photo....

Visit awe inspiring  Salt's Mill in Shipley, to see David Hockney's latest exhibition

Well we will see, how much I achieve, once again posting and commenting could be sketchy, but I am taking my camera and laptop, so you are coming with me.
