Audrey Hepburn, Posthumous Saleswoman

I don't normally have adverts on my blog but I will make an exception in this case.  A well known British chocolate brand with the help of CGI has remastered footage of Audrey Hepburn and turned it into a television advert, the advert has been beautifully done.  Quite what Audrey Hepburn would have made of  posthumously promoting chocolate I really don't know especially bearing in mind she was a good will ambassador for UNICEF an organisation that was close to her heart, Hepburn herself was helped by the organisation receiving food and medical help after World War II.

The Independent has an interesting piece on this advertisement and the subject of posthumous advertising here.

So what do you think, Is it ethical to use departed icons in this way?

  1. Since most can not get enough of this amazingly beautiful icon, most will watch the ad. Will most buy the chocolate as well, I doubt it. After reading the article, her son's approved, so I really do not think much can be said. She did leave her talent, fortune and legacy to her heirs

    1. I agree with you Maryanne, her sons approved this ad as they have approved others, there was a Longines campaign a while back that also featured Audrey and whilst she was alive she herself appeared in Blackgama campaigns although this is the first television ad I have seen her in and it certainly is lovely to see her image amongst some of the tackier TV adverts. Lets hope her sons can keep a tight control of her image, I would hate to see Audrey's image used to flog Vacuum cleaners!

The power of advertising affects us in a subliminal way, we may not think we are influenced by commercials but we are, watch this brands sales rocket!

  2. This is so beautifully done ... but, i really hate the whole practice. It seems so disrespectful somehow.

  3. Strangely enough, the woman in the film looks like she's a double for Hepburn.
If her estate is funding charities in some way, then using her films for advertising is all right as long as the products are ones she would agree to.

    1. Maywyn the first time I saw it I thought the same thing but it is definitely her image the reason it looks slightly unreal, not quite Audrey is the effect of CGI.
