The First Rose

Yesterday evening MG popped out for a few moments and came back bearing this rose, the first rose bloom of the year and very apt for the first of May.  I placed it on my bedside table and the heavenly scent wafted over me all night.  I adore roses, particularly climbing ones which this one is, it took me many hours of research to find this rose.  I wanted climbing roses on the front of the house, they had to be red as they are on a light background, they had to be repeaters and most importantly they had to be scented.  Eventually I found what I was looking for; Etoile de Holland climbing rose from David Austin.

My vision was that they would climb all over the front of the house, they are a very vigorous variety, they are so vigorous that MG wants to get rid of them, too much work! I go for beauty over practicality every time, after all some things are just worth the trouble and when those roses start to bloom the scent in the courtyard is heavenly not to mention the exquisite beauty of the rose itself. We have constant arguments over them, MG cuts them back regularly and sprays them with rose treatment, but nothing stops them, (it's a shame MG cuts them back, secretly I would love to train them so they cover the entire front of the house).

Anyway for the moment there is a truce, the roses are now still at a manageable stage and they are coming into bloom.  They are safe for the moment.

I wish you all a wonderful May Day Weekend.

  1. Nothing illustrates the difference between our climate in the west and yours in the south better than this blog post. I am so jealous that you have blooming roses at this time of year. You are so lucky.

I am now going to order this rose because our passionflower on its frame at the front of the house is looking the worse for wear. Nothing lends as much charm to a house as a climbing flowered plant all over the front of it. Tell MG he does not know what he is talking about

Not the traditional 'porte de bonheur' - but much more beautiful

  4. Ditto French Fancy's comment, you must be a whole month ahead of us in the garden. How lovely to sleep with the scent of roses beside you. I have a bouquet of lilac in my bedroom.

  9. Oh how gorgeous! I'm afraid I'm all for beauty over practicality every time too. Roses climbing all over the front of the house - sounds blissful to me!

  10. I say let that rose bush run as wild as you were when you were at school!! All this from a girl who will only have beautiful and practical at once. But a rose bush, really - it is meant to run wild and fill the air with the lush scent of savage nature. It can't all be trimmed and neat - at least that is what I tell my perfectionist husband ;-)
